In recent years, live broadcasts of court proceedings on platforms like YouTube have played a pivotal role in transforming public consciousness in Kazakhstan. These broadcasts not only inform citizens about the judicial system but also foster emotional engagement, enhance legal awareness, and spark discussions on pressing social issues. Supported by public debates and the influence of social media figures, this phenomenon has contributed to significant legislative changes, such as the adoption of the 2024 law protecting women and children from domestic violence. Despite this impact, little research has explored how court broadcasts influence public perception and legal literacy. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the role of live-streamed court cases in shaping legal awareness and public discourse. The methodology includes content analysis of social media discussions on three high-profile cases (“Bishimbayev,” “Talgar Case,” and “Land Issues”), a questionnaire survey of university students assessing the effect of court broadcasts on legal literacy, and expert interviews with lawyers, human rights activists, and public representatives. Findings indicate that court broadcasts significantly increase public legal awareness by exposing legal processes and shedding light on hidden crimes, particularly those related to corruption and violence. The emotional engagement of viewers fosters empathy, likening these broadcasts to “TV series” in terms of dramatic appeal. Public discourse on social media exerts pressure on authorities, accelerating legal reforms. In conclusion, court broadcasts on social media are a crucial element of democratization in Kazakhstan, enhancing legal consciousness and driving social change.
