Staying up to date on medical literature may be a core tenet of developing into a competent physician, but practicing medicine in a compassionate and patient-centered manner is just as important. To provide patient-centered care and also to function well as part of a care team, strong communication skills are required. Related to our ability to communicate is our ability to express compassion both for our patients and those we work with. This chapter focuses on listening skills as integral to communication in our work with patients and colleagues.
