Ambulatory General Internal Medicine physicians are comprehensive care specialists and we need to start marketing ourselves that way. Who else thrives on a problem list that has, on average, 15 medical problems, a typical medication list with ~10 medications, at least one behavioral health diagnosis, and a minimum of one social determinant? Not only can the ambulatory general internist manage this, but we are good at it! We enjoy weaving through a field of complexity to determine the diagnosis. We are, therefore, primed to take on the world of Cancer Survivorship. What follows is a general, non-exhaustive glance at what a career in cancer survivorship might look like. And I’ll give you a hint—it involves chronic complex longitudinal care.
