This chapter draws some brief conclusions from the arguments in the book. Ideologies and belief systems provide cost-effective narratives that help individuals and societies interpret reality, define values, and envision futures functioning as heuristics in place of complex, resource-intensive knowledge acquisition. Belief systems and ideologies offer orientation and influence behavior. As ideological discourse has waned since the 1990s, society has lost a key source of value-based guidance. To rebuild this, we need inclusive, knowledge-based forums for open, critical discussion about which beliefs, belief systems, and ideologies best support a humane and prosperous future.
