The Visibility and Non-intrusiveness of Peripheral Vision Information During the Use of AR Devices: The Effects of Transparency Levels, Color, and Font Size

The application of Augmented Reality (AR) devices is becoming increasingly widespread across various fields, including healthcare, rescue operations, military, and gaming. As a key component of AR, information display has been primarily studied in the context of target attention centers; however, research on peripheral visual information encoding remains underexplored. This study focuses on the encoding of peripheral visual information in AR devices, examining the effects of font size, color, and transparency levels. A total of 20 participants were recruited for the experiment. The results indicate that font size had no significant impact on the visibility and non-intrusiveness of peripheral visual information in AR devices. This suggests that, in designing peripheral visual information for AR devices, adjustments to color and transparency may take precedence over font size. A transparency level of T0.75 provided the optimal balance between visibility and non-intrusiveness for peripheral visual information. Additionally, the study partially identifies the optimal threshold range for transparency in peripheral encoding (T0.5-T0.75). The research also demonstrates the applicability of RAL 9016 Traffic White and RAL 5017 Traffic Blue colors. These findings expand the range of applicable visual areas for information encoding in the field of AR technology.
