When discussing narratives, we are seeking to sketch the storylines which are developed through the economy, in media, policy and socio-political debates, framing the context in which environmental issues are understood in Ireland. Environmental narratives throughout the twenty-first century have helped to shape the reality of the national interpretation of related issues. These narratives, however, have not remained static. Shifts in framing environmental issues and sustainability have been borne out of numerous factors, be they internal or external, civil or political. A focus is given on the years 2006–2023, from the last days of the Celtic Tiger, through the recession, up to the Paris Accord, and beyond to COVID-19 and the war on Ukraine. I preface this with a brief discussion of the previous three decades, back to the 1970s. Through an analysis of policy, civil society developments and media messaging, twenty-first-century environmental narratives in Ireland are outlined, giving a national context for the region under investigation in this book.
