This essay considers Paula Meehan’s explorations of the past, particularly her implicit claim that we are determiners of the ways in which we can make use of our memories, whether sorrowful or joyful, to fortify ourselves as we grow older. It examines a small, representative range of Meehan’s poetry, looking specifically at her depictions of grandparents, parents, children, and the adults they become.
