It is well recognized that inflammation is a residual cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor that may result in cardiovascular events and mortality even in those being on the goal with other recognized CVD risk factors. Moreover, inflammation, besides cholesterol, takes a direct part in the formation of atheroma plaque, therefore, all the interventions, including dietary ones, might be of great value. Based on the available data, regular coffee consumption in a dose-dependent manner (which is however, individual) is associated with a significant reduction of inflammation, measured mainly with C-reactive protein. On the other hand, it should be emphasized that if we look at the final results concerning the percentage and absolute reductions of CRP/hsCRP, it does not seem that this dietary intervention may have important clinical relevance thus, it should always be treated as an adjunct, especially in those with elevated hsCRP. One should also remember that this effect is much more pronounced for black coffee without milk addiction, and especially for women, mostly associated with the fact that chemical components of coffee may interact with estrogen metabolism.
