Emerging Mobile Apps for Enhancing L2 Listening: A Case Study of Moroccan Students
摘要
Recently, learners and instructors widely utilise a wide range of educational mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) applications, making MALL the best potential framework for improving language skills and enhancing language learning and teaching quality. Despite the rising popularity of several popular apps to support language learning and teaching, empirical research on their pedagogical potential in improving language skills, mainly listening skills, still needs to be researched. Equally important, though recent evidence has proven the effectiveness of MALL, such as Podcasts and TED Talks, in boosting learners’ listening skills, more research is needed into the implementation of other recent applications, such as English Listening Step by Step. Given this, this experimental study analysed the potential benefits of a mobile application in enhancing the listening skills of Moroccan EFL secondary school students. The study included a control group (n = 30) and an experimental group (n = 30). While students in the control group were taught listening traditionally, the experimental group used a mobile application (English Listening Step by Step) for one semester. A listening pre- and post-test was used to compare the participants’ performance in both groups. For data analysis, independent sample t-tests (SPSS-26) were used to determine if there was a difference in the scores of the groups before and after the intervention. The results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group’s overall listening performance and sub-skills: listening for gist and detail. As a result, it was found that utilising English Listening Step by Step app boosted students’ listening skills more effectively than traditional instruction.
