E-waste comprises the discarded electronic items which is fastest growing cluster of waste by the uncontrolled usage of electronic devices like laptops, mobile phones, electronic household items etc. The development of recent technologies and the growing need for the better functioning devices increases the amount of e-waste. It contains the substituents such as radioactive substances, heavy metals, halogenated compounds that may cause the harmful effects on the human wellbeing and the environment. Its improper disposal is life-threatening because they can reach to waterbodies, soil, ground water and air. E-waste recycling is the one of the major e-waste management approaches. Recycling process mainly targets the recovery of valuable metals like silver, gold, platinum etc. and base metals like aluminium, copper, iron etc. Majority of the e-waste recycling is performed in uncontrolled manner in the informal sectors, this cause the direct exposure of highly toxicants to workers and individual who are residences in the area having the informal sectors. Informal recycling results in the emission of considerable halogenated compounds and heavy metals which causes impacts on human health like thyroid hormone disruption, undesirable pregnancy outcomes [spontaneous abortion, pre-term birth, still born] reduced child weight and impaired neurodevelopment. Hence there is a need for strong sustainable practice for the management of e-waste. This review aims at the better understanding towards the e-waste, e-waste recycling and its impact on human health and environment.
