Drug Facilitated Crime (DFC) encompasses a range of illicit activities, such as robbery, money extortion, misuse of vulnerable individuals, rape, and sexual assault, also referred to as Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault (DFSA). These criminal offences involve clandestinely providing a psychotropic substance to a victim. Drug-facilitated crime involves the perpetration of non-consensual acts against victims who are rendered debilitated by the effects of a drug. This hinders their capacity to oppose or provide consent to the action. In a conventional situation, an individual with predatory intentions, such as a rapist or thief, secretly spikes a hypnotic substance into the beverage of an unsuspecting individual—both female and male victims commonly experience memory impairment both during and following the occurrence. The ideal substance for the culprit is easily accessible, facilitates administration, swiftly impairs consciousness and induces anterograde amnesia. (i.e. it prevents the recall of events that occurred whilst under the influence of the drug but not general memory). Because of the low dosage of most drugs involved (benzodiazepines, hypnotics, neuroleptics, antihistamines), a surreptitious delivery into beverages such as coffee, soft drinks (cola), or alcoholic cocktails is fairly simple. The majority of drugs used in DFC are either prescription or over-the-counter. They can be found in food as well as liquids like coffee, water, or even alcoholic beverages. In cases of drug-facilitated crimes and drug-facilitated sexual assaults, the most prevalent prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals used are Z-drugs, which are alternatives to benzodiazepines (BZDs) used to treat insomnia. This article provides information about the pharmacodynamics and fundamental chemistry of Z-drugs (Zolpidem, Zopiclone, and Zaleplon) along with their use in drug-facilitated crimes and drug-facilitated sexual assaults, and the difficulties that have been encountered in forensic investigation of these drugs.
