Unrealistic beauty standards around the globe have led to a rise in consumption that results in a proportionate expansion in the production of cosmetic products. This leads to a boom in the addition of heavy metals, to cosmetic production. Lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, and chromium are the frequently used heavy metals for the manufacturing of cosmetic and personal care products. The harmful effects of heavy metals vary depending on numerous factors, such as dose and exposure length. Carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, lung damage, dermatitis, cardiovascular disorders, renal dysfunction, and endocrine, developmental, and reproductive disorders are the main concerns in a myriad of problems. These provide insight into the detrimental effects on various flora and fauna in the ecosystem. The purpose of this review is to look into the environmental effects of heavy metals, their toxicity to human health, and the importance of their mitigation. Ensuring compliance with regulations, more strict guidelines, and a ban on harmful chemicals will aid in preventing future incidents of heavy metal toxicity.
