Understanding the Distribution and Environmental Implications of Heavy Metal Traces in River Water: A Comprehensive Assessment of Thamirabarani River

Rivers play a crucial role in the ecological balance of a region, serving as vital sources of water for various anthropogenic and natural activities. Thamirabarani River, situated in Tirunelveli District, is of significant ecological importance, supporting diverse ecosystems and human settlements. However, the increasing anthropogenic activities in the surrounding areas have raised concerns regarding the presence and distribution of heavy metal traces in the river water and sediments. This comprehensive study aims to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of heavy metals in Thamirabarani River, focusing on their potential environmental implications. Water samples were collected at regular intervals along the river course, covering both upstream and downstream regions. A suite of analytical techniques, including atomic absorption spectroscopy is employed to quantify the concentrations of various heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As). The study investigates the potential ecological risks posed by these heavy metal traces on aquatic organisms and the overall river ecosystem. The findings of this study will contribute valuable information for policymakers, environmental agencies, and local communities, enabling informed decision-making to mitigate and manage the impact of heavy metal contamination in Thamirabarani River.
