Loss is a universal human experience; yet, in the United States, our social infrastructures—from cultural norms to scientific institutions to technology’s visions of the future—preclude many from receiving the help and wisdom they need to heal. The future of spiritual infrastructure will be defined by our ongoing rethinking of social infrastructure—identifying and supporting critical processes that lead to healing, vitality, and flourishing. This chapter will explore design principles for a new vision of sacred space, presenting one attempt from the field to model how we can better support interiority, deep connection, and the remaking of meaning. How can spiritual infrastructure and sacred space be directed toward healing and flourishing in a world that necessarily incurs grief and loss? In this chapter, I put forward some ideas.
