Within the research project KIRaPol.5G an AI-supported radar technology to assist in police surveillance of public spaces and train stations is being developed. The introduced surveillance technology uses AI-supported radar technology to detect potentially safety-threatening situations. The advantage lies in the fact that the use of radar technology allows for surveillance while preserving privacy and data protection rights. As part of the project, the acceptance of the AI-supported radar surveillance technology has been investigated. Interviews and an online survey were conducted with the German population. The study focused on the acceptance and presumed assessment of safety regarding the potential use of AI-supported radar technology. The results show that the presumed perception of safety at night would be significantly increased through the use of the surveillance technology, whereas no significant difference was observed during the day. Despite a general acceptance, respondents expressed concerns regarding the risks, technological functionality, and a preference for traditional safety measures such as security personnel or video surveillance. To increase acceptance and promote a positive attitude toward the surveillance technology, these concerns should be transparently addressed.
