With the recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative AI, applications based on large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, Claude and others have revolutionized the landscape of the internet. As the debate on the impact of AI on society invigorates and regulatory efforts take on full steam, numerous AI tools have already been made available for widespread use. While this has triggered researchers to investigate the trust in the newly available technology, less attention has been given to the evolution of interpersonal trust among the users of those tools. In this paper, we investigate, showcase, and analyze some of the effects caused by the widespread availability and use of generative AI tools. We use an empirical survey approach to obtain data for our analysis, which enables us to come to some interesting, yet alarming findings. The results show that, while people tend to generally trust the AI for assisting them in some of their daily tasks, they distrust the use of AI by others who employ it for their tasks. Moreover, their default assumption when witnessing a good solution presented by others is that AI was used to produce the solution, thereby showing less appreciation for the result. The results are also informed by more granular sentiment analysis of the responders’ stance towards generative AI.

摘要
