Green
摘要
Green is the most frequent colour word, with 49 occurrences spread over 27 poems. These represent 29% of the total corpus of poems, and green constitutes 22% of the total number of colour term occurrences. We begin with a characterisation of the symbolic connotations of the colour green. It is generally agreed that these are largely positive, with nature, balance and harmony as frequently mentioned associations. However, it also has some negative associations, such as immaturity, envy and even decomposition. There is also a strong link with religion, especially in the context of paradise, such as the biblical Garden of Eden. We then present the categories of entities which are described as green. Two thirds of these are concerned with the natural world and only 15% with man-made objects. Finally we discuss each occurrence of green in relation to the entity category it relates to, breaking superordinate categories such as ‘natural world’ down into the finer ones presented in Chap. 3 .
