The Use of More than One Colour Word in a Poem
摘要
The number of colour terms in a poem varies from one to six, with a mean of 2.46 and a median of 2. For poems with more than one colour term we present the frequency of each pairing of colours. We then examine the combinations of colours in the 37 poems which contain two, three, four, five or six colour terms. We also look at the distribution of poems with more than one colour term with respect to the volume of poetry in which they occur. Finally, we examine four specific poems (Fern Hill, Altarwise by owl-light, In country sleep and From love’s first fever to her plague) in detail, analysing the relationship between the use of colour terms and the macrostructure of the poem.
