The fundamental reforms to the constitutional order, the four years of Turkish Cypriot isolation and the exponential growth of militarism, put the two communities before a series of faits accomplis. Despite the first formal inter-communal round of negotiations in 1968, the deadlock continued into the 1970s and the darkest moments of Cypriot history were yet to unfold.
