The urgent issues of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss are discussed, which greatly threaten biodiversity and human well being. Global populations are growing and human activities more intense, putting increasingly greater pressure on natural resources by causing the destruction of habitat, pollution and impacts of climate changeClimate change. This chapter looks at causes of environmental degradation, the value of ecosystem services, and valuation tools for ecosystem health assessment. It is an attempt to increase understanding of the interdependence between biodiversity and ecosystem services and to offer practical advice on sustainable management principles, using a broad approach that includes case studies of regional environmental degradation and comparative evaluations across a range of biosphere reserves. It develops and utilizes a set of assessment methodologies including data collection techniques, asset–threat matrices, spatial and non spatial data analysis based on ecosystem assessment, to assess the state of ecosystems and to identify the critical areas where policy interventions are necessary. Future recommendations aim to enhance resilience to climate changeClimate change through biodiversity conservation, promote sustainable management across sectors like agricultureAgriculture and forestry, and put in place robust policy frameworks that consider biodiversity conservation as a priority. This chapter focuses on key strategies to effectively address environmental challenges, which are adopting nature-based solutions, promoting local community participation in resource management and integrating traditional ecological knowledge in decision making process. Ultimately, it emphasizes the need for creating ecosystems which are resilient to an ever more unpredictable world, sustaining both ecological integrity and human livelihoodsLivelihood. The results presented herein are intended to be used to inform future conservation efforts and to create policy strategies that promote sustainable development in conjunction with protection of our Earth’s rich biological wealth.
