Although mechanized farming promises to promote farm productivity, soil health, resource efficiency, and climate-resilient farming practices, its spread has been inadequate in India. This study aims to explore the influence of various government support services and extension networks in fostering mechanized farming by small farmers in the cyclone-prone villages of Baraberia and Bodai, located in the Amdanga block of West Bengal. Using primary data collected from 128 small farmers through a multistage random sampling design, the study employed a binary logistic regression model to identify key factors influencing the willingness to adopt mechanized farming by small farmers. The Garret Ranking method was also used to rank among various challenges farmers encounter in adopting mechanized farming. The findings reveal that interaction among farmers, farmers’ participation in awareness campaigns, government support, and direct access to the market by farmers in selling their produce significantly increase the likelihood of adopting mechanized farming, while their income from nonfarm sources reduces it. Challenges such as financial constraints, lack of training and awareness, paucity of custom hiring centres, and uneconomic size of landholdings further inhibit its adoption. The study highlights the critical role of government policies, particularly in providing financial support, establishing custom hiring centres, supplying farm machinery at a concessional rate, and abolishing the existence of a long chain of intermediaries in case of selling of farm produce by the farmers in the market, conducting awareness generation camps and workshops, and mitigating the problem of lack of technical competence in handling farm machinery, to enhance mechanized farming adoption among smallholders.
