Rapid Assessment of Landslide-Induced Vegetation Damage Using Disaster Vegetation Damage Index (DVDI)

LandslidesLandslide are among the most frequent and destructive natural hazards affecting the hilly regions of Bangladesh. In recent decades, the frequency and intensity of these events have increased, driven primarily by climate changeClimate change and exacerbated by anthropogenic factors such as extensive hill excavation, unregulated land use, and rapid population growth. Despite the severity of the issue, there is no comprehensive database to systematically analyze the trends in vegetation loss caused by landslidesLandslide in these regions. Accurate assessment of vegetation damage is essential for enhancing conservation strategies and informing restoration efforts. This study employs a remote sensing-based approach to quantify vegetation damage resulting from landslidesLandslide. The Degree of Vegetation Damage Index (DVDI) was derived from MODIS data to assess the extent of damage. The spatial distribution of vegetation loss was analyzed, revealing that approximately 2,922.25 km2 of vegetation was affected by landslidesLandslide. To validate the damage assessment, an NDVI profile analysis was conducted, demonstrating the expected downward trend indicative of vegetation loss. The findings of this study provide critical insights for policymakers and decision-makers, enabling improved monitoring of vegetation degradation following landslideLandslide events and facilitating more effective mitigation and restoration strategies in the context of future extreme weather and climatic disturbances.
