Exploring Model-Based Systems Architecting Digital Threads in Virtual Reality

Adopting a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach generates a seamless flow of linked data that connects all aspects of a product life cycle: digital threads. The consistency of the linked set of digital artefacts must be actively managed over the system life cycle, from design to manufacturing to maintenance and beyond. Immersive analytics has proved helpful in managing large datasets. Still, no research has focused on using advanced interactive visualisation to make use of and manage digital threads. This paper presents GraphXplore, a virtual world that enables systems engineers to explore MBSE digital threads by interacting with a rich, immersive, layered 3D graph visual metaphor where nodes and edges represent MBSE entities (e.g., needs, functions, architecture elements, etc.) and interdependencies, respectively. The MBSE digital threads of a helicopter landing gear system serve as a case study to illustrate and evaluate GraphXplore. Future work will concentrate on the continuous improvement of GraphXplore and an empirical comparison with competitive digital thread solutions.
