A Comparative Study on the Use of Artificial Intelligence and Other Approaches for Biomimetic Design: Application in Packaging Innovation for Fragile Products

Biomimetics combines biological knowledge with the technical inventive capacity for developing innovations. Specialists underscore that new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), will revolutionize this field. Therefore, this study assessed the application of AI and classical approaches for searching and retrieving biological inspiration in biomimetic design, more specifically, for the development of a packaging design for fragile food products. A multi-methodological approach was adopted, consisting of five creative sessions, based on the following resources: scientific literature database; biomimetic database; mind mapping; and two AI chatbots (ChatGPT-3.5, and Microsoft Copilot). The results were analyzed according to the session duration; quantity, relevance, and applicability of the retrieved biological attributes. The recurring attributes found throughout multiple sessions were examined regarding their morphology, structure, and pertinence for an egg packaging design. The advantages and limits of the five approaches were discussed. Comparatively with classical approaches in biomimetic design, AI seems to require an even greater participation of human experts to ensure prompt quality and to conduct a critical evaluation of the generated propositions, assessing their pertinence to the desired context. Thus, it is possible to conjecture that AI will not completely replace other biomimetic design resources, but can be used complementarily. AI represents a valuable asset in the designer’s toolkit for discovering and analyzing biological information, facilitating problem-solving, enhancing the proposition of alternatives, and streamlining creative sessions. Additional investigation and experimentation with other classical biomimetic approaches and AI tools are recommended, including studying their combination throughout the creative process.
