A Value Driven Digital Twin for Academic Purposes

The competitive challenge proposed by Industry 5.0 requires the development of high skills in the technological and organizational fields. To provide these skills it is useful to develop devices that can be used to expe-rience the situations that future technicians will face in their professional career. Furthermore, it is possible to design products and processes integrating techno-logical and organizational tools. This is the experience presented in this paper: the creation of IoT devices (the most recent is the IoT Useless Box) using IT tools, PLM design and Lean organization. The result is a Digital Twin, based on open-source authoring tools and low-cost components, that fully supports bidirectional communication between the physical object and its digital counterpart.The experience, fully described in terms of technological solution, project man-agement, cost and benefit analysis, has been carried out within university courses to prepare our students and future technicians to operate effectively in Industry 5.0 ecosystems.
