Sustainable Representations of Tourism on Digital Media: The View of Central Portugal
摘要
The use of the globally known video-sharing platform, YouTube, by tourism agencies to disseminate, promote, and raise awareness regarding sustainable practices has gained prominence since the transition to digital media tools. There is, however, little academic knowledge of what constitutes eco-friendly tourism on video content, and how this might affect tourist activities. Even less research is available about the centre of Portugal, a region with great potential as a sustainable destination. The following research paper firstly offers a brief literature review of relevant studies; secondly analyses a sample of four official Portuguese tourism channels for their viewership, and content, and finally, examines the notion of sustainability in a select number of videos, chosen based on a set of criteria. As of the 22nd of April 2024, the last verification date, 33 videos have met the criteria, and their audio–visual, and textual elements are further analysed. A conclusion is drawn on how viable the contents are in conveying the concept of sustainability, and recommendations are made on areas for improvement.
