Improving Toilet Accessibility in Public Spaces for the Elderly Group in Chinese Cities: An Investigation on the Design and Usability of Toilet Risers
摘要
This study delves into the elderly people's experience of using public restrooms in Chinese cities. It investigated whether the toilets were properly equipped with toilet aids; and if the design of these equipment and devices had given full consideration to the elderly demographic. Through comparative analysis of existing toilet aids, we aimed to comprehend their general usability and objective impact on elderly users, subsequently categorizing and summarizing our findings. We evaluated the effectiveness and identify issues related to materials, craftsmanship, and efficiency. This research aspired to offer both theoretical foundations and practical guidance for enhancing the design of future toilet aids used in public space, to ensure safety and comfort for the elderly people, thereby elevating their quality of life and overall well-being. The research results not only provided practical and feasible improvement suggestions for product design but also offered theoretical support and practical references for enhancing the public restroom experience for the elderly, promoting the sustainable development of public facilities.
