Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is not just criminal justice issue; most countries around the world recognise it as a social problem for which different sectors, including military, welfare, education, and healthcare, as well as both public and private sector employers, have responsibilities. Within any of these sectors, professionals may become aware that a client or employee has suffered SGBV and require support. This chapter will discuss specific challenges that can arise when conducting interviews in the context of SGBV investigations or enquiries. It will outline the realities of SGBV, the factors that may impinge on effective engagement with a survivor of SVBG in the investigative interviewing context. Drawing on real-life examples, it will provide guidance on how to conduct trauma-informed interviews with survivors of SGBV and effective interviews with suspected perpetrators in both criminal and non-criminal contexts.
