Investigative interviews in the context of corruption investigations can be challenging for interviewers for a number of reasons including the complexity of the specific case and the position of power or influence of the alleged perpetrator. Specialist subject-matter knowledge is often required to elicit relevant information from witnesses and to challenge explanations or defences provided by alleged perpetrators. This chapter will discuss the characteristics of corruption and explore the decision-making involved. It will also discuss the similarities and links between corruption, white-collar crime and organised crime. Ultimately, this chapter will outline challenges and present solutions for conducting interviews with whistle-blower, persons making a report of corruption (PMR) and persons who are the subject of a report (PSR) in the context of corruption investigations. Real-life examples will be provided to illuminate problems and to highlight solutions.
