Introduction to Metabolic Engineering
摘要
Metabolic engineering is a revolutionary field set to optimise biological systems for the synthesis of valuable compounds such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and bioplastics in larger amounts. It points out inefficiencies in natural systems and pathway bottlenecks and challenges that arise from product toxicity and energy inefficiency. It enhances metabolic pathways within organisms by systematically redesigning and regulating these pathways. The technique, coming from genetic engineering, synthetic biology, and computational modelling, increases yields and improves bioproduction processes. This has then led to a critical focus of metabolic engineering on the difference between biological potential and industrial utility, with low yields, slow rates of reaction, and undesirable by-products often occurring at variance. Innovative tools, such as CRISPR-Cas9 and the development of machine learning for pathway optimisation, take efficiency and scalability in production a step further toward establishing sustainable, safe, and practical biotechnological solutions. Metabolic engineering has wide-ranging impacts, bringing multiple benefits across sectors, starting with cleaner energy and sustainable agriculture, all the way to novel medical therapies, hence addressing some of the world’s biggest issues in sustainability and medicine.
