The Integration of Virtual Reality and Traditional Crafts: An Innovative Exploration of the Ru Porcelain Making Experience

In recent years, digital technologies have played a significant role in the inheritance and preservation of intangible cultural heritage. With the continuous advancement of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, realistic visual scenes, complex haptic feedback, and immersive auditory experiences enable VR to convey information in a comprehensive and immersive way, breaking the limitations of traditional cultural dissemination channels. This shift has transformed the public from passive observers to active participants. Currently, Ru porcelain culture, as an important part of China’s intangible cultural heritage, faces multiple challenges, including limited dissemination and recognition, as well as the loss of craftsmen and techniques. To address these issues, this study designs a VR-based Ru porcelain-making experience center, aiming to enhance young people’s understanding and interest in Ru kiln culture through an immersive experience, thereby promoting its preservation and development. The experience center is developed using the Unity3D engine combined with Blender modeling, featuring highly realistic visual scenes, exquisite haptic feedback, and immersive surround sound effects. It stimulates the entire Ru porcelain-making process, from quarrying, clay preparation, molding, and glaze selection, to glazing and firing. Participants can freely explore the virtual environment, interact with virtual tools, and personally experience every detail of the porcelain-making process. This breaks the limitations of space and time, allowing people to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Ru porcelain culture. Through the implementation of the VR-based Ru porcelain-making experience center project, we found that participants’ experiences were significantly improved. Young people's knowledge and interest in Ru porcelain culture were notably enhanced. They not only gained a more intuitive understanding of the porcelain-making process but also enjoyed the fun and challenges of making porcelain in the virtual environment.
