The National College Student Science Literacy Survey (NCSSLS) was conducted from 2016 to 2018 to understand American college students’ science literacy and their water-energy-food (WEF) nexus knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions, including their responses to message stimuli at different levels or with varying factors, which will be discussed in later chapters. After a pilot round on a university campus, the first round was conducted on a representative sample of 676 students from 235 U.S. universities and colleges. The results show that students, on average, scored a B (80.7%) on the science literacy test, but both their subjective and objective knowledge of the WEF nexus rated low. Their WEF-nexus knowledge positively correlated to their WEF-nexus attitudes and behavioral intentions. Students’ top news sources included social media, face-to-face conversation, and news websites, with their favorite social media being Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Factors contributing to their science literacy and the relationship between their attitudes toward science, technology, and religiosity are also examined. The second round, administered with the same sample, collected 402 responses from 185 universities. It embedded 11 versions of a WEF-nexus message, including a control group, to test message levels and factors.
