In our review, we highlight areas in which intersectionality frameworks have made particularly strong contributions to social psychology. Intersectionality frameworks advance the key insight that every individual occupies and constructs multiple social identities and statuses tied to interlocking systems of power. Intersectionality scholars also insist that studies of race, gender, and other relevant social categories to be studied together under the assumption that different category combinations carry distinct outcomes. We organize our review around how social psychologists have used intersectionality frameworks at the macro, micro, and meso level of social life, respectively. We argue that combining intersectionality and social psychology offers powerful theoretical and methodological tools for understanding inequality. Intersectionality frameworks contribute an understanding of macro level processes beyond cultural beliefs, such as capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism. Social psychology contributes the articulation of empirically testable interactional mechanisms involving multiple statuses and identities.
