Social psychology provides a useful set of tools for social scientists interested in the social determinants of health. Although much of the contemporary literature on health focuses on structural determinants and fundamental causes, there is much to be learned at the intersection of the person and the environment, sitting between micro- and macro-levels. Social relationships are critical to health, but social psychology provides a more realistic view of how supportive relationships are construed and their most potent qualities. By the same token, a robust sense of self helps to promote good health, but social psychology has helped to elaborate the complexities of identity and the importance of self-narratives. Social psychology also points to links between culture and health and helps to illuminate when and why, for instance, stigma is consequential. In all these literatures, social psychology is helpful in providing a more psychologically realistic view of individuals, as well as a more complete understanding of the social environment.
