Smart home technology leverages rapid technological advancement and the sharply decreasing prices of components and sensors to convert a normal household into a smart home through automation. Home automation is possible through the interconnectedness of smart home devices, which share data collected in their environment by several sensors. The proliferation of smart technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation has gained a lot of research interest, with over 14,000 documents found on Scopus using the terms as search criteria be- tween 2013 and 2023, with an average of 1500 documents published each year. However, the literature on the adoption rate of smart technology, focusing on its drivers and barriers, is limited, with Scopus and Web of Science indexing only five documents. This paper aims to conduct a qualitative study of smart home literature and surveys from users and providers to produce a pooled view of the current state of smart home technology drivers and barriers.
