The present study and research aim to briefly analyse the development of the idea of ​​realizing a circular economy in Bulgaria. A comprehensive review of the basic strategic documents developed in Bulgaria, such as a national strategy and an action plan in this direction, is made, by defining and analyzing the goals and objectives in detail. Emphasis is placed on the problems that have arisen during the implementation and the author’s analysis of the current state is made, which is considered as part of the general state of the country and the European Union. Examples are given to support the author’s theses, as well as those that serve to support the conclusions and conclusions. The circular economy is examined in both planes as a revolutionary model or a model that exists and is being upgraded. The main emphasis is placed on the approaches and relevant sectors in which the principles of the circular economy can and are successfully applied. The development is supported by a project survey and statistical data from Eurostat. Bulgaria is significantly lagging behind in implementing the strategy and planned activities, which is a result of the political crisis of the last few years and the inability to elect a regular government. All this and a complex of economic and other social factors further complicate the situation and create obstacles to the implementation of the national strategy.
