This chapter describes several methods of analysis of heterocyclic aromatic amines in cigarette smoke. These compounds, when present, are at very low levels, and consequently, the required sensitivity of the analytical methods should be high. The reported results for heterocyclic amines are in general difficult to compare since the reported analyses were performed on different types of cigarettes. Some of the heterocyclic amines listed as HPHC were found below the quantitation limit in the analyzed cigarettes.
