The sociological study of emotions has developed into a mature and wide-ranging subfield. This chapter details theoretical and substantive developments at the micro, meso, and macro levels, including approaches that build on symbolic interactionism, dramaturgy, social practice theory, and comparative-historical approaches. At the micro level, we discuss definitions of emotion and affect, biophysiological correlates of emotion, emotion taxonomies, and the relevance of self and identity. At the meso-level, we review emotion management theory, interaction ritual theory, and their relevance to family, work, organizations, inequalities, power, and status. At the macro level, we turn to institutions, macro-level processes and regimes, and global forces. Throughout, we draw on primarily sociological literature, but note areas of overlap with psychology, neuroscience, and history, incorporating research in and beyond American sociology.
