Symbolic interactionism is a social constructionist framework that highlights the importance of meaning for understanding social life. It views society as people interacting, which is possible because of their ability to take each other’s perspectives and behaviors into account within a system of shared meanings. Social interaction may produce meanings and structures that shape future interaction, but human action and social life are dynamic and malleable. Although symbolic interactionism is considered a micro-sociological perspective because it treats social interaction as problematic and a topic for social science investigation and analysis, many interactionist studies investigate some reoccurring group or organizational setting, or some reoccurring problems faced by some type of similarly situated persons. Such studies show how self and interaction are shaped by meso- and/or macro-levels of social organization.
