Independence was followed immediately by the refusal of Rhodesia to the south to accept its own independence on the basis of majority rule. The white settlers declared a unilateral independence on their own racist terms and prepared to defend it militarily. Zambia had no military resources and had to develop them from scratch, even while President Kaunda advanced a philosophy of pacifism and what he called ‘Humanism’.
