Initiation
摘要
Once separated from the Ordinary World, the main character or characters undertake a journey that, as seen in Chap. 3 , can be a physical one of events and challenges or a personal one of development and growth. Chap. 4 examines the heart of this journey by exploring how characters prepare or are prepared for a significant change and how their friends and mentors are part of this change. It then discusses the key challenges, ordeals and enemies that main characters face, followed by a section about the consequences and rewards that result from their choices. Campbell argued that Initiation was “a favourite phase” which has “produced a world literature of miraculous tests and ordeals”. This chapter identifies the elements of this phase in our collection and argues that in children’s picture books about refugees, the aspirations of host countries are revealed. They are portrayed as the Special World in which the main characters will fight and overcome the challenges they have carried with them from the Ordinary World.
