Children’s picture books about the refugee experience have become common since the turn of the millennium, reflecting the importance of these issues in contemporary society and evidencing the global impact of various conflicts that cause refugee flows. This chapter summarises our survey of 75 relevant peer-reviewed studies of children’s picture books about refugees. Our review begins with an overview of the most common narrative arcs identified in children’s books about refugees, followed by a discussion about how refugees are characterised. Next, the review explores prevalent themes in the genre and how these are represented, before moving on to an explanation of how refugee picture books are used for educational purposes. The chapter closes with academic critiques of this genre of picture books.
