When technologies or digital content are built inaccessibly, people with disabilities are excluded from equal participation. People with disabilities often face (1) the need to advocate for accessibility remediation, (2) if advocacy is successful, then the delay as the technology or content is remediated, or (3) if unsuccessful, the frequent reality that the technology or content is never remediated. Millions of documents are created daily, by a range of users with little to no expertise with accessibility. A born-accessible approach for documents would limit the need to advocate, eliminate the delay as a document is remediated for accessibility, and eliminate the need to find workarounds if the document is never remediated, which would be a major shift in power dynamics. We believe that AI has great potential for supporting content creators toward a born-accessible approach for documents. In this chapter, we detail our goals and our progress towards using AI to support content creators in adding accessibility markup as they simultaneously create the content, removing the need for remediation and the associated time delay. Because many of the features of a document are comparatively simple and repetitive yet content creators may struggle to identify appropriate accessibility markup, we believe that this approach is well-suited to AI support. At the workshop, we hope to present our progress on developing this approach, and we hope to contextualize born-accessible document creation within the broader goal of disability justice.
