This second chapter begins with the premise that urban planners must thoroughly analyze the context in which they operate to identify effective approaches to solve urban problems. It thus introduces a method for analyzing urban areas, focusing specifically on public spaces. The method presented integrates contributions from various authors with the epistemological and axiological proposal suggested in the previous chapter. Sections 3.2–3.5 will provide some general guidelines and thought-provoking questions for analyzing our urban public spaces. This includes assessing their environmental compatibility and ecological quality; the characteristics of the communities that use, live in, and manage such spaces; and the quality of the built environment. This chapter also actively contributes to the ongoing discussion about public spaces in our cities. It offers a possible definition by aligning with proponents of radical democracy, who argue that “genuinely public” spaces are those universally inclusive and unconstrained arenas that all urban communities can enjoy, manage, transform, and use to build greater social and ecological justice. By defining what “public space” is and should be, Sect. 3.5 will suggest guidelines for evaluating the “public genuineness” of the public space being studied. Lastly, Sect. 3.6 will suggest pedagogical approaches and techniques for carrying out urban analysis effectively. The method proposed will empower all participants in the investigation to assess the perceived spatial and socio-spatial problems as well as the interventions designed to address them.
