This chapter gives a detailed account of what amounted to be a permanent turn in Nazi military fortune. The shattering effect of the radio silence after the encirclement of Stalingrad is amply illustrated. Nevertheless, the Christmas and New Year schedules with a special focus on the famous Ringsendung, linking home and fighting fronts, are given extensive treatment. Broadcasting’s stubborn sticking to continuity and normality is illustrated in the special five-hour variety show on New Year’s Eve. Nazi radio’s preparations for the announcement of the surrender at Stalingrad in February 1943 are treated in detail, as well as, after days of mourning, the gradual return to normal programming.
