This chapter clearly demonstrates the limits placed on Nazi broadcasting. The problems of receiving domestic stations worsened as the war proceeded. The shutting down of many transmitters in the evening hours due to fear they could aid enemy aircraft, meant many listeners were deprived of “prime time” listening. The number of working sets fell owing to a) reduction in set production b) difficulties of repairs, defective valves and a scarcity of batteries, and c) the destruction in air raids. To offset losses sets were confiscated from the occupied Netherlands and Norway. There was a notable disruption in listening habits with air raids and frequent alarms. Longer working hours also restricted listeners’ radio time.
