Limited late afternoon alternative programmes were introduced. Goebbels’ use of deception tactics before the attack on the USSR was mirrored in a spectacular hour-long radio show. Goebbels endeavoured to increase the amount of light entertainment but was opposed to radio plays. The striking popularity of the military station Soldatensender Belgrad, as well as Goebbels’ reaction, is illustrated. The widespread dissatisfaction with domestic programmes led to Hans Hinkel taking over de facto control of radio entertainment. The Christmas/New Year programmes are examined at a time of the first serious setbacks on the Eastern Front.
