This chapter covers the period of the “phoney war” and is characterized by a continuation of pre-war broadcasting structures despite some reduction in programme choice. After a short interruption, Nazi television resumed transmission. There was considerable annoyance among listeners due to the interruption of programmes on home stations with foreign language broadcasts and the early close-down of some stations as a precaution against enemy air incursions. To extend radio reception, news bulletins and military communiques were relayed on streets and in restaurants. Great attention is paid to the lavish series, Wunschkonzert (“Request Concert”), linking home and fighting fronts, as well as to listeners’ response to the series. Broadcasting during the first wartime Christmas is also illustrated.
