Accentuating an Innovative and Entrepreneurial Performing Arts Sector in Emerging Economies: A case of Zimbabwe
摘要
Performing arts practices are an essential foundation for sustainable human development in emerging economies. However, the major challenge is to establish how the sector can contribute to sustainable human development as required in the targets of SDG8. Thus, the study sought to explore and give clear propositions on how the performing arts sector in Zimbabwe can promote continuous, all-encompassing, productive, sustainable economic growth for the nation. The chapter utilized a descriptive approach as a research design and data was gathered through interviews with selected performing art experts, economy experts, and arts administrators. Analysis of data was accomplished through employing thematic analysis and ‘thick descriptions’. Research results indicate that the performing arts sector can create an environment for people, independently and communally, to cultivate their full potential and to lead productive and creative lives that they cherish. Industrializing and innovating the performing arts is of paramount importance for the economic development of the nation and the arts sector. Performing arts are also the cornerstone of employment creation, income generation, and poverty eradication. Creative industries in the form of performing arts enhance personal income growth while performing arts activities are imperative for regional development and generate economic revenues for the state and districts concerned. Arts and cultural festivals are sustainable tourism products while performing arts are essential for the development of the tourism and entertainment industries that enhance the appeal of Zimbabwe as a tourism destination. Performing arts goods such as live performances and recordings are exported through tours and the internet generating revenues. Based on this study’s findings, the chapter suggests a musical arts innovation model that addresses how musical arts performance can become fit for purpose in advancing sustainable human development in emerging economies.
