A Greener Host for Digital Entrepreneurship Startups: A Story of the Rey Cement Factory
摘要
Oman Vision 2040 initiates a movement to revitalize abandoned cultural heritage sites and monuments, addressing national priorities such as people and society, economy and development, and a sustainable environment. The literature review shows that a considerable number of monuments from our invaluable heritage remain unused. Their lack of real-world function pushes them to the verge of being ruined and completely demolished. The research gap identifies the most appropriate process to find new functions for reusing derelict monuments. The article aims to explain the role of green adaptive reuse in preparing old, derelict, and abandoned buildings to host emerging digital entrepreneurship startups. The Rey Cement Factory in Iran is selected as the case study of the research. It is one of the famous shared heritage sites of Iran and Germany from the beginning of twentieth century. The methodology of the article is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda. The results of the research show that adoption of the green adaptive reuse strategies improves the SDGs criteria in spiritual, ecological and people level. The research proposed reuse the industrial heritage sites to host the digital entrepreneurship startups especially in MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. It serves as a catalyst to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
